Contractor support

What mechanical design information do contractors need before installation?

A drawing is only part of the package. Establish duties, interfaces and decisions before work starts.

DAVENS / Engineering notes

Before installation, confirm document status, engineering duties, interface responsibilities, open decisions and verification requirements.

Confirm the information is suitable for the work

Start with the issue status and purpose of each document. A tender layout or coordination sketch may not be suitable for installation. Confirm the agreed design responsibility and which party resolves remaining selections or details. Make outstanding decisions visible in a register linked to the installation programme.

Read the design basis alongside the drawings

The design basis explains the intended use, operating conditions and engineering criteria. Calculations support duties; drawings show arrangement; schedules identify equipment; specifications define requirements. Check that these documents agree. An airflow change in one schedule can affect duct sizes, fan pressure, noise and controls elsewhere.

Close equipment and interface questions

Equipment data should address the selected duty and the interfaces the project actually needs. These can include dimensions, weight, electrical demand, controls, drainage and maintenance access. Check what the supplier includes and excludes. A commercially attractive substitution needs technical assessment before it is treated as equivalent.

Coordinate for installation and future access

Space for a duct or pipe is only one consideration. The installation sequence, support strategy, service zones and future access also need coordination. Confirm the responsible designers for structure, fire stopping, electrical supplies and other interfaces. An unresolved clash is a decision to be managed, not merely a coloured mark in a model.

Plan how the result will be verified

Identify commissioning requirements before equipment becomes difficult to access. Agree the records, acceptance criteria and responsibilities needed for handover. Maintain controlled mark-ups as changes occur. Trying to reconstruct the installed arrangement at the end of a project creates avoidable uncertainty.

General guidance for planning an engineering scope. Project requirements and applicable standards must be established for the specific building and appointment.
